放射光科学研究センター センター長 石川 哲也
放射光科学研究センターでは、世界最高性能の放射光を発生することができる、大型放射光施設SPring-8とX線自由電子レーザー施設SACLAの研究開発を進めています。放射光とは、光速近くまで加速された電子が、その進行方向を磁石などによって変えられた際に発生する電磁波です。SPring-8とSACLAの放射光は、物質の性質を原子・分子レベルで解明し、さらに化学反応などの超高速の動きを捉えることができ、広範な分野の最先端研究に利用されております。最高性能の放射光を安定して提供し続けるとともに、次世代SPring-8に向けての研究開発も進めています。

2019年6月18日付で、土肥義治前理事長からバトンを引き継ぎ、JASRI理事長に就任しました。SPring-8が1997年に稼働を開始して以来、私はユーザーとしてSPring-8を利用して研究活動を行ってきました。今後は立場が変わりますが、ユーザーを支援し、良き研究課題を選定するというJASRIに与えられたミッションを通して、SPring-8／SACLAにおける研究活動の発展に尽力したいと考えています。

The Synchrotron Radiation Research Center conducts research and maintains development of SPring-8, a large synchrotron radiation facility, and SACLA, an X-ray free electron laser facility, which can provide the world's highest performance synchrotron radiation. Synchrotron radiation is comprised of electromagnetic waves, which are generated when electrons are accelerated to near the speed of light, then change their direction of movement under the influence of magnets or the like. Synchrotron radiation from SPring-8 and SACLA can elucidate the properties of materials at the atomic and molecular level, and can capture ultra-high-speed movements, such as chemical reactions, and is used for cutting-edge research in a wide range of fields. In addition to providing the most stable highest performance synchrotron radiation, we are also advancing research and development for the next generation of SPring-8.

On June 18, 2019, I took over the baton from former President, Yoshiharu Doi, and became president of JASRI. Since the operation of SPring-8 began in 1997, I have been involved in research activities at SPring-8 as a user. From now on, the position is changing. Through JASRI's mission, the users are supported, and good research projects are being selected. I hope for the progressive growth of SPring-8 and SACLA as well as the continuation of all ongoing efforts.
