History
| October 1988 | The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and RIKEN established a joint research and development team for large-scale synchrotron radiation facilities. |
| June 1989 | Established the Harima Science Garden City in the Hyogo Prefecture. |
| December 1990 | Established the Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI). |
| November 1991 | The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and RIKEN began construction on SPring-8. |
| October 1994 | JASRI was designated as an organization to promote synchrotron radiation research. |
| March 1997 | Synchrotron Radiation was achieved. |
| October 1997 | SPring-8 opened to users. |
| October 2003 | RIKEN transitioned to an independent administrative institution. |
| October 2005 | The operation of SPring-8 transitioned away from the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute into a two-party system comprised of RIKEN and JASRI. |
| July 2006 | Enforcement of the “Act on the Promotion of Public Utilization of the Specific Advanced Large Research Facilities” began. |
| March 2007 | JASRI was selected as a registered facility to promote the use of SPring-8. |
| October 2007 | A ceremony was held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of SPring-8 being open for operation. |
| June 2009 | The total number of researchers who have used SPring-8 hit 100,000. |
| March 2011 | JASRI was selected as a registered facility to promote the use of specified synchrotron radiation facilities (SPring-8 and SACLA). |
| April 2012 | JASRI transitioned to a public interest incorporated foundation. |
| April 2015 | RIKEN transitioned to become a National Research and Development Institute. |
| April 2016 | The total number of researchers who have used SPring-8 hit 200,000. |
